Shop Mingei Identity

I worked closely with the internal design team at Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park during their three-year renovation and expansion to refresh their shop identity. As part of their renovation, their attached shop was also thoughtfully redesigned (by architect LUCE et studio) to elegantly showcase a larger amount of carefully curated items made by skilled artists and craftspeople.

The design goal was to match a new identity system to the beautiful, functional items they display for sale, while also keeping familiarity for their pre-existing shop patrons and bringing in a more youthful feel. After push and pull of high level concepts (and in height-of-pandemic disoriented fashion), we came upon a well-balanced visual solution: a reinterpreted version of Case Study 3 passed along to final approval.

The scope was an identity system comprised of logo, colors, icons, patterns, stationery, packaging, and signage. Multiple directions were presented over the course of the project and three are presented here below: Study 1: inspired by minimalism intertwined within the Principles of Design + Elements of Art, Study 2: inspired by an interweaving quilt graphic, representing the strong fabric between makers of beautiful, functional craft, and Study 3 — inspired by "craft at play" with an emphasis on texture and one-of-a-kind work.
